What is a Study Trip?

Think of a Study Trip as part language course, part cultural adventure, and a fully-supported travel experience. Over two to four weeks, you’ll study at trusted Japanese language schools, take part in traditional and modern cultural activities, and explore Japan with safety and guidance from our team.

Some participants join to experience Japan for the very first time, while others come to deepen their language ability through immersion. No matter your reason, Study Trips are designed to be more than just a holiday — they’re transformative experiences that leave you with new skills, friendships, and lifelong memories.

What are some Study Trip options?

Spring Course

This three-week course is a wonderful way to experience Japan in bloom. Based near Akihabara, Tokyo’s famous Electric Town, the school offers an international environment with medium-intensity classes. Outside the classroom, you’ll participate in three cultural activities each week, which includes indigo dyeing, a tea ceremony while wearing kimono, and decorative sushi making.

While you will have plenty of free time to explore on your own, weekend excursions to places like the historic town of Kawagoe will introduce you to places that you may not have heard about or considered visiting on your own. Given the season, you will also have the chance to take complete advantage of sakura season and enjoy your own hanami picnic with locals at some of Japan’s most scenic parks.

Traditional Japanese Course

Take the plunge and immerse yourself in the richness of Japan’s cultural traditions. Over the course of three weeks, learn taiko drumming, make wagashi sweets, and take part in a tea ceremony while wearing kimono. With around four activities each week, this course offers a balance of culture and discovery, including a two-night trip to Kyoto. Fun excursions to seaside towns like Kamakura and Enoshima let you experience even more of what Japan has to offer.

Summer Course

Looking for a way to spend your summer vacation? This is our most popular course, offered over three or four weeks. Classes are held in Akihabara and conducted in a lively, international atmosphere with medium-intensity lessons. Weekly activities include tea ceremonies in yukata, Japanese indigo dyeing, wagashi making, and a local exchange activity like a Japanese BBQ party or takoyaki party.

Leave the hustle and bustle of Tokyo behind with day trips to Kamakura and Enoshima, enjoy a traditional yakatabune dinner cruise, join local summer festivals, and even try making your own fireworks. Extend to a fourth week and you’ll also visit Tokyo DisneySea and enjoy rooftop dining — a beloved summer tradition in Japan. With cultural immersion at every turn, this course captures the excitement of Japanese summer like nothing else.

Language Schools & Classes

Our partner schools provide professional, engaging lessons designed for all levels. Classes are always held in the morning, Monday through Friday, so you can focus on studying when you’re most alert and have your afternoons free for activities and exploration.

All lessons, even beginner levels, are taught entirely in Japanese using the immersion method. This may sound intimidating, but teachers do their best to put you at ease and create a safe learning environment. They first introduce a very limited vocabulary and keep repeating it in order for you to get comfortable using it naturally. This immersive teaching style is the best for helping you pick up the language faster and more confidently. All study materials are provided, and lesson content varies depending on your level and the school you attend.

In addition to morning classes, you can expect three to four activities per week. These usually happen in the afternoons and last a couple of hours, but some courses include full-day or overnight trips on weekends. Your schedule is sent out about one month to two weeks before the trip starts, so you’ll know exactly what to expect but still be pleasantly surprised during the program.

By the end of your trip, you’ll feel more at ease using Japanese in real life. You’ll be able to order food, chat with locals, and navigate daily life in Japan.

What are my accommodation options?

We offer several types of accommodation to suit different needs and budgets.

Homestay

Live with a Japanese family through our partner, Homestay in Japan. Placement is arranged about two weeks before arrival. Breakfast and dinner are included (no refund for missed meals). Homestays are ideal if you want to practice daily conversation and experience daily Japanese life at home with a Japanese family.

Budget hotel

Located in Shinjuku, our two-star budget hotels offer private or shared rooms with basic amenities (toilet, shower, desk, fridge, kettle). Cleaning includes daily towel changes, trash removal, and weekly sheet changes. Facilities include microwaves, coin laundry, and vending machines. These hotels are clean and functional, but simple — ideal if you’re looking for a central, no-frills stay.

Standard hotel

For more comfort, our three-star standard hotels (often APA or similar) include breakfast, cleaning every three days, and a wide range of in-room amenities. Facilities may include communal baths, restaurants, and spa services. Located within five minutes of a station and about 30 minutes from school, this is a convenient option if you want extra privacy and comfort.

What activities and cultural experiences are included in Study Trips?

Your Study Trip is packed with hands-on experiences that go far beyond the classroom. Join a tea ceremony and discover the art and mindfulness behind matcha preparation; practice calligraphy (shodō) to create your own kanji keepsake; or step into history with a samurai experience, where you can try on armor, throw shuriken, and learn about Japan’s legendary warriors. Each activity is designed to be interactive and fun, giving you a chance to learn, create, and enjoy while connecting with Japanese traditions in a personal way.

On top of these workshops, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for day trips and excursions to explore. Visit historic towns, cultural landmarks, and museums, or take part in immersive local experiences — all meticulously planned around your language learning. These adventures bring your lessons to life, letting you see, do, and experience Japan in a way that a guidebook simply can’t capture.

What do past Study Trippers have to say?

Many students leave their Study Trips with memories and experiences that stay with them long after they return home. Their reflections highlight not only the fun and adventure but also the personal growth and language gains that came from their fully-supported trips.

One student shared how transformative the experience was:
“Great! This was my first time abroad by myself and really opened up my world. The tour guide was especially helpful as to not just helping me get on the trains and back to my host family, but also gave me good recommendations on what to see in Japan. I would definitely do this kind of experience again!”

The balance between structured learning and freedom to explore also stood out:
“It was a lot of fun, and it was great getting to practice Japanese. I had the freedom to enjoy the trip as I liked, and it was a very liberating and fulfilling experience.”

And of course, the activities, lessons, and overall atmosphere were highlights for many:
“It was amazing, I loved every second. All the staff were so kind and friendly, the accommodation was amazing, clean and spacious. The lessons were really useful and the teachers [were] so supportive. The activities were so fun — the taiko drumming, tea ceremony, and karaoke activities were beyond awesome.”

Study Trips are so much more than a vacation — they are a carefully balanced blend of learning, cultural immersion, and adventure. They leave students with skills, confidence, and memories that last a lifetime.
