If you’re planning to study Japanese in Japan, you’ve probably come across the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and its N5 level more than once. Student visa applicants are generally expected to have a basic level of Japanese ability. In the past, evidence of around 150 hours of study could be used as proof. As of the October 2026 intake, immigration has changed the requirements. Applicants are now typically expected to demonstrate their level through an official exam result (such as JLPT N5 or equivalent) or by completing a school assessment/interview. Please note that some schools may require both.

Who is this course for?
Our JLPT N5 Prep Course is a revision course, not a complete beginner’s course. It’s designed for learners who have already studied Japanese to roughly an N5 level and want to review what they remember, rather than learn the material for the first time.

- Returning to Japanese study after a break and want a refresher before you take an exam or need to use your Japanese language skills
What’s covered in the course?
Over three weeks you will cover grammar, vocabulary, kanji, reading, listening, and speaking through structured lessons, quizzes, and a mock exam.
- Week one covers core grammar such as particles, dictionary form, te-form, and adjective conjugations, as well as a speaking assignment where you introduce yourself on video or audio.
- Week two builds on week one, with grammar around demonstratives, dates and places, quantities and preferences, abilities, permissions and requests, invitations, and giving and receiving. It also includes a speaking assignment where you introduce your family.
- Week three is test week: you’ll work through a full mock JLPT exam, have extra speaking practice, and complete a final speaking assignment.
Why does speaking practice matter?
While the official JLPT N5 exam doesn’t test speaking (it only covers vocabulary, kanji, grammar, reading, and listening), many language schools and visa-related procedures now include a speaking assessment or interview that is separate from the JLPT itself.
This course builds speaking practice in from the start, with video or audio assignments reviewed by your teacher, plus monthly live conversation sessions where you can practice with other learners. If you are preparing for a school interview, this online course is designed to help you with that.
Course format and support
This three-week course is built to fit around your own schedule:
- Lessons are pre-recorded, so you can study whenever it suits you
- Over 700 questions to practice your Japanese
- A monthly live conversation session lets you practice speaking with a teacher and other students
- A private student community gives you a place to ask questions and get support between lessons
- An optional 30-minute private lesson with a teacher is available if you’d like one-on-one feedback
- You’ll have three months of access from your purchase date, so there’s no pressure to rush through it
Will I receive a completion certificate?
If you’d like a completion certificate, you’ll need to make sure you finish every lesson, complete all of the required tests, and submit all assignments for teacher approval. If an assignment needs more work, you can revise and resubmit it.

- Who is this course for?
Anyone who has already studied JLPT N5-level Japanese and wants to review and test their knowledge before an exam or school assessment. It’s a revision course, so some prior knowledge is expected.
- Does the JLPT N5 test speaking?
No, the official exam only covers vocabulary, kanji, grammar, reading, and listening. This course adds speaking practice separately, since many schools and visa-related processes require it.
- What if I’ve forgotten some of my N5 material?
That’s completely normal, and it’s exactly what this course is for. Many have studied N5 before but haven’t used Japanese in awhile. This course helps you identify what you remember, what you’ve forgotten, and which areas to focus your review on.
- How long is the course, and will I get a certificate?
The course is designed to be completed over three weeks, but you have three months of total access to it. A completion certificate is available if you finish every lesson, test, and assignment.
- Can I get support while I’m taking the course?
Yes, you’ll have access to a private student community where you can ask questions, get help from teachers, and connect with other learners. You also have access to monthly live conversation sessions.
