Studies in Japan are eligible for CSN funding
Did you know that you can study in Japan with CSN loans and grants, just like in Sweden?
In addition, you may be eligible for extra student loans to cover the additional costs that come with studying abroad, such as school tuition fees, insurance, and airfare. Once your school application has been approved, we will help you prepare the documents you need from your school and guide you through your CSN application step by step.

Who can apply for CSN funding for studies in Japan?
Whether you are planning to study Japanese at a language school, attend university, or enroll in a vocational college, all schools partnered with Go! Go! Nihon are approved for CSN student finance applications. This gives Swedish students a unique opportunity to apply for and begin studies in Japan faster and more easily than in many other countries, with a loan that is repaid only after your studies are completed—just like a regular CSN loan for studies in Sweden.
There are some requirements and conditions that must be met in order to qualify for student finance. For example, you must have lived in Sweden for two consecutive years during the past five years.
It is also important that you have successfully completed any previous studies for which you received CSN funding. Studies at a language school are classified as upper secondary level studies, and the funding comes from the same allowance as studies at Komvux or folk high school. Studies at universities or vocational colleges in Japan are classified by CSN as higher education studies.
You must study for at least 13 weeks to qualify for CSN funding. This means you cannot receive CSN student finance for studies in Japan that take place under a temporary visitor/tourist permission, which allows a maximum stay of 12 weeks. In addition, your studies must end with a final examination in order to be eligible for CSN. For language school studies, this means you must study for at least six months.
It is also possible to apply for CSN even if you come to Japan on a Working Holiday visa, as long as you meet CSN’s standard requirements for student support.
For most language schools, you must also be at least 20 years old to apply for CSN funding. This is calculated from the beginning of CSN’s calendar year, which starts in week 27 each year (that is, the beginning of July). If you are under 18 but would like to study Japanese in Japan with CSN, there are a limited number of options available—you would need to enroll in a full program (usually two years) and graduate. BEFORE YOU APPLY
When is it time to submit your application?
If you apply to a language school, vocational college, or university through us, our Swedish team will make sure you submit your CSN application and all required documents on time. As a general rule, you should contact us six months before your intended study start date so we have enough time to help you complete both your school and CSN applications in time.
Student finance for studies abroad is paid out monthly, just like when you receive CSN funding in Sweden. It is also possible to apply for a larger one-time payment in addition to your monthly living cost payments. This is intended to help cover your school’s tuition fees. It is usually paid out every six months, and the first payment is typically made around 2–3 weeks before your studies begin.
If you would like to extend your studies at your school, you can simply submit a new CSN application.
Timeline
Apply to a school
Apply to a language school, vocational college, or university in Japan and wait for your admission result — all of our partner schools meet the requirements for CSN student finance for Swedish students.
Complete the required documents
For language school studies, the CSN form 5509W and a letter must be submitted. For higher education, please ask your contact person. After that, we will send the documents to the school so they can complete the remaining sections.
Submit your application online
Complete the application yourself on the CSN website under “My Pages”. Don’t forget to attach the completed forms and any other documents you have received from your future school.
Decision
After a few weeks, you will receive CSN’s decision regarding your application. You may need to submit additional documents, so it is important to start the process early. If your application is approved, the next step is to enter your bank account details.
Payment
When there is one month left before your studies begin, you will be able to submit your study declaration through My Pages on the CSN website. The first payment usually arrives 2–3 weeks before your start date, which is when it is time to pay your school’s tuition fees.
