Nomad Experience is a one-month program in Shimoda, Japan, where a small international group tries 10 remote-friendly careers, before committing to any of them.

It is not a language school and not a job placement. Over four weeks you go hands-on with 64 hours of workshops, live like a temporary resident, and leave with a clearer sense of how you want to work and where you want to live.

We try food before we order and clothes before we buy but we are expected to choose how we work and where we live in one shot. Nomad Experience exists to change that: try first, then decide!

Each week you work directly with new skills including web design, writing, video editing, digital marketing, community management and more, guided by working digital nomads. No experience is needed. Just curiosity.

Between workshops you live in a real local community two and a half hours south of Tokyo: cooking together, joining local events, and becoming friends with the people of Shimoda. Everything runs in English, so no Japanese is required, though you will naturally pick up living Japanese along the way.

Participants come from all over the world and from many backgrounds, tech and non-tech alike. The program runs four times a year, and Nomad Experience and its Shimoda community have been featured by NHK World, Nikkei Asia and Yahoo Japan.

You do not need a perfect plan. You just need to show up and try.

Japanese lessons

Try 10 remote careers in one month

In just four weeks, you experience what would otherwise take years to explore on your own. Each career is a focused 2-day workshop: day one covers the basics and a hands-on task, day two goes deeper with mentor feedback and real-world tips on how the work actually gets done.

Skills vary by season but typically include: Virtual Assistant, Graphic Designer, UI/UX Designer, Web Developer, Digital Marketer, Social Media Manager, Community Manager, Online Teacher and Video Editor.

The approach is learning by doing, not lectures. A single job title is really a bundle of smaller skills and trying them directly is the fastest way to see which ones fit you. Discovering what you do not enjoy is just as valuable as finding what you love.

Workshops run fully in English, so no Japanese is required to take part. But Shimoda is a genuine local community, not a tourist resort, Japanese is part of everyday life here, so while you may naturally pick up real, if you want to go further, optional private Japanese lessons can be arranged alongside the program.

You are guided throughout by experienced facilitators who are remote workers and digital nomads themselves. No advanced tech skills are required; if you are comfortable typing, managing files and copy-pasting, you are ready.

Nomad Experience Japan

Good to know before you apply

Ages 18–45, with most participants in their 20s and 30s, from all over the world. Past participants include corporate employees, freelancers, teachers, students, and civil servants from both tech and non-tech backgrounds. No prior experience is required.

Everything in this programme runs in English and our on-site team helps you with daily life. Because Shimoda is a real local community where Japanese is spoken every day, you will naturally pick up living Japanese, and optional private Japanese lessons can be arranged.

Your place is confirmed once you complete the application and pay the program fee, which is due within one week of applying. Please only apply if you are committed to joining, places are limited, and an uncertain application can block a spot for someone else.

Within 7 days of payment – no fee. From the 8th day after payment – USD 500. Within 7 days before the start date – the full amount applies. If a season does not reach its minimum number of participants (decided around two months before the start date), it may be rescheduled with no cancellation fee.

Travel and medical insurance is strongly recommended (a nomad-friendly provider can be introduced), and you are responsible for your own visa and travel documents.

The Nomad Experience is about exploration and direction; outcomes vary by individual and the program does not guarantee employment or income.

Just booked my SECOND trip with Go! Go! Nihon, so I think that says everything 😂 Seriously though, this experience exceeded my expectations. I made lifelong friends from all over the world, experienced so much personal growth, and fell even more in love with Japan. What I appreciated most was the balance. There was enough structure and group activities that I never felt completely alone or overwhelmed, but also enough independent time where I truly felt like I was solo traveling and discovering Japan at my own pace. It was honestly the perfect mix of freedom and support. The team was helpful, communicative, and made the process feel much less intimidating, especially navigating a new country and culture. If you’ve been thinking about studying abroad or doing a study trip in Japan, I genuinely recommend giving this experience a chance. I already can’t wait to go back.
Response from the owner:Hello Bridgette, thank you for your review! We're so happy you're joining us again and we can't wait to see you!

This study trip was an amazing experience that I will recommend to anyone even slightly interested in going to Japan! The coursework can feel intense, but you make great progress in such a short amount of time! I enjoyed every activity Go! GO! Nihon and even go a few souveniers I made myself! You get what you put into the program, so your experience really is up to you! It's going to be a crazy 3 weeks, but you will be able to learn the language, gain a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture, and meet amaxing people from all over the world. 10/10 would recommend!
Response from the owner:Hi Jessie! Thank you so much for sharing your study trip experience. We're so happy you had a good time, and we hope to see you in Japan again soon!

Response from the owner:Ciao Sabrina, Grazie per le bellissime parole! Siamo contenti ti sia trovata bene con il nostro servizio per entrambe le esperienze! 🙂 Ti auguriamo un in bocca al lupo per gli studi e speriamo di vederti al Welcome Event!

I had a really great time during my study trip with GoGoNihon! The school organization was optimal and there were a lot of extra activity to attend during the various afternoons after the lessons were over (with some free time as well to freely explore). All the activities were focused on themes that were dear to the participants and they we really fun! The people from GoGoNihon were always there to accompany us and help us with whatever may come up, allowing for the activities to be more enjoyable. I would really recommend to sign up for a trip, especially if you wish to travel alone, as you will make a lot of new friends along the way!
Response from the owner:Hello Edoardo, thank you for your review! We're really happy you enjoyed your time on our Study Trip!

Gogo Nihon was super easy to communicate with and to book the course. There were multiple options for payments and instructions were very clear. Super easy knowing the hotel and activities were all booked and I only had to think about what to do with my spare time. The school I attended was very nice in a central location and easy to find and get to. All staff at Gogo nihon were very kind and helpful throughout the whole process. Tour guides were very friendly and fun to hang around with too. A lot do thought was put into the activities to tailor them to the study trip selected. I would definitely look to book with them again in the future. Only constructive feedback I would give to Gogo Nihon is to please advise customers of where they will be staying or where you are planning to book accommodation (maybe specify subject to change). School location information and any other relevant info about the trip sooner than 1 month from the trip especially if payment has been made almost 6 months prior. It’s a lot of money to pay without knowing anything. This could also assist customers to make decisions on the type of accommodation they want to choose when booking.
Response from the owner:Hello Camelia! Thanks so much for your kind words! We're really glad to hear you enjoyed the course, activities, and found the booking process smooth and that our staff made a good impression too. We also appreciate your feedback about the timing of the school and accommodation info. The school is listed on the website at booking, and we send more details about the school and accommodation via newsletters after booking. That said, we totally get that waiting for final confirmations can be a bit stressful, especially after booking early. We’ll look into how we can make this info clearer and more accessible earlier on. And of course, Student Advisors are always happy to share more details if you ever have questions! Thanks again for the helpful feedback and we’d love to have you join us again in the future!

I absolutely loved the experience with Gogonihon! Their 3 week program was an amazing way to explore Japan while also getting yourself acclimated with the language! The staff and students were all amazing and very kind people! If you were ever thinking of taking a study trip i highly reccomend booking with them! Especially for a first time trip!
Response from the owner:Hi Charlize, thank you for your review! We're so happy you enjoyed your time on our Study Trip!

I participated in a three-week study trip in July 2025. I had decided to rely on GoGoNihon because it was my first experience in Japan and I liked having support once I arrived. I am so happy I did, thanks to their organisation I was able to focus on studying and gaining new experiences. The staff is kind, reliable and supportive. A special thanks to Valeria and Jose who accompanied us through the activities: they gave me lots of tips to enjoy the experience and we all had a great time together! They were also always available for anything. I would love to do another trip with them in the future!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review Giorgia! We're so happy you got to experience Japan for the first time with us. We hope to see you again in the future!

Hi! I participated twice at gogonihon’s studytrips 😉 one in Tokyo back in 2019 and one this year 2025 in Osaka. I stayed in Tokyo for about a month and a half and I had so much fun that I wanted to do it again in another city and why not in Osaka ! Osaka was sooo different than Tokyo, the people are more open, have more time and are so fun to talk to, just like in Italy where there are differences between northern and southern people… I really enjoyed every afternoon activity that we had, such as cooking class and the ninja experience and many more… we had Japanese classes in the morning, very challenging at the beginning, but with the time it gets better 🫣👍🏼 I really love the gogo team, because they’re so helpful and funny too! If you want to experience Japan as a local, but you don’t have so much time because of work, I recommend the studytrips that last 3 weeks. For sure my next time experience would be the Akita one 😉 when I have time again I will do that ! I just love Japan and to be able to experience it as local is a plus for me and I think for some of you too ! Book and you won’t regret it! Big thumbs up to Mara, Crystal, Ana and Jose ! Great people ! Ciao from Michela 🥰✌🏼
Response from the owner:Hello Michela, thank you for your review! We’re so happy you enjoyed both your Study Trips with us and love seeing the photos of your trip 😊

Krystal has helped come to Japan for my first (and second) time with the study trips, and Saskia is currently helping me live in Japan to continue my journey in studying the language and starting a future there. I cannot express in only words on how much they've helped me, but to put it simply, I really appreciate what they've done for me and I am incredibly grateful that Go Go Nihon exists. If you want to go to Japan, have them help you!! You won't regret it.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review! We're happy we could help you through this journey!

After a great experience during a 3 week study trip with Go Go Nihon, I decided I wanted to do the 2 years abroad, and I’m so glad for the support they offer! Layna has helped me immensely and has been incredibly patient - promptly answering any questions I have when I don't understand something. I also have prescription medication, and immigration requires more paperwork for such things, which is pretty tedious, and she has guided me through that too. The best part of the service is that any time a new document or form arrives from your school, immigration, etc. the representatives have the experience to explain its purpose to you and what needs to be done! It’s incredibly reassuring to have help from a real person with experience, instead of a customer service bot just showing you through the motions. Amazing service, I will always recommend!! I’m so excited! Thank you forever, Layna! 😀
Response from the owner:Thank you for your positive review. We're happy that you enjoyed your Study Trip with us and then decided to use our service to also study for 2 years in Japan! We hope you enjoy your studies!

I have done 2 study trips with GO GO Nihon so far and each trip was so much fun! If you’re looking for a way to explore Japan while learning or improving your Japanese, I definitely recommend signing up with Go Go Nihon! They have a list of trips for each season and each trip is unique with different cultural activities to do. I plan on doing another trip with them soon!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review. We can't wait to see you again on another Study Trip!

GoGoNihon always provides a great experience when visiting Japan! The staff are very friendly and helpful and they will definitely make you feel welcome, especially if it's your first time visiting Japan. The activities are also great, and the schools provide you with an opportunity to meet even more people who are studying Japanese and this helps to practice your Japanese language skills further. If you want a good blend of experiencing Japan and also studying Japanese language, I would definitely recommend one of GoGoNihon's study trips! They're an excellent way to get a feel for Japan and learn the language at the same time. I also made some great friends who have similar interests as me!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review Abel!
Jordane D.
I didn't get to go on the study trip in the end but I was really looking forward to activities they had planned. I know it would have been a fun and rewarding trip, deepening my love and understanding of Japanese culture. I also received great feedback from the language school I was enrolled in through the program and I was looking forward to improving my Japanese conversation skills. The Go! Go! Nihon team makes the process very easy and all you have to do is submit the required information and get ready for an amazing trip. The staff is also very helpful and provide you with as much information as you need. I think this is a great way to experience Japan and especially if you want to take the JLPT in Japan.
Response from the owner:Hi Jordane! Thank you so much for your kind words. We are very sorry you weren't able to join our trip this time, but hope to see you in Japan in the future! We are always happy to help!
Roberto M.
They helped me through the seemingly complicated process of planning a study trip to Tokyo, and made it seem like it was a breeze. Your best bet if you want to move to Japan and deepen your understanding of both their language and culture. Highly recommended!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review Roberto!
Lara
Long story short: the summer course was literally the best 4 weeks study trip and easily one of the best trips I've been part of so far. Fun japanese classes in the morning with just the sweatest teachers ever and awesome activities in the afternoon with lots of nice people and the funniest guides. 🙂 Huge thanks to my coordinator who even managed to extend my stay to 4 weeks last minute. <3
Response from the owner:Hi Lara, thank you for the kind words! We are so happy to hear you had a wonderful time in Japan. We hope to see you again soon!
munting K.
Great experience with the services and efforts they provided, lots of questions replied with quick replies professionally! Really help a lot in the preparation for the study trip 🙂
Response from the owner:Thanks so much for your feedback! We'll continue working hard to help our students 🙂
