Whether you&#8217;re visiting on a trip or <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/study-abroad-in-japan-can-change-your-life\/\">studying abroad in Japan<\/a>, in the case you are feeling ill, it\u2019s important to know how to take care of yourselves and communicate with a doctor. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This post covers key phrases and vocabulary to describe how you\u2019re feeling, certain conditions, symptoms, treatments, parts of the body, and more so that you can feel prepared if you get sick in Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>At the doctor\u2019s office<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on how severe your condition is, you can decide between <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/japanese-hospitals\/\">visiting a hospital<\/a> (<strong>\u75c5\u9662<\/strong> <em>byoin<\/em>) or clinic (<strong>\u30af\u30ea\u30cb\u30c3\u30af<\/strong> <em>kurinikku<\/em>). If you have mild symptoms, you can first visit a clinic. A quick search online will point to several clinics around your area. You can make an appointment (\u30a2\u30dd <em>apo<\/em>) by asking \u30a2\u30dd\u3092\u53d6\u308c\u307e\u3059\u304b (<em>apo<\/em> <em>o toremasuka?<\/em>), or go directly to the clinic.\u00a0 At the doctor\u2019s office, you\u2019ll first have to check in with <strong>reception <\/strong>(\u53d7\u4ed8 <em>uketsuke<\/em>) and they\u2019ll ask you to fill out a <strong>medical questionnaire form <\/strong>(\u554f\u8a3a\u7968 <em>monshinhyou)<\/em> and if applicable, for your <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/japanese-health-insurance\/\">health insurance<\/a> (<\/strong><strong>\u5065\u5eb7\u4fdd\u967a<\/strong> <em>kenkou hoken<\/em>). Be sure to check with your <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/language-schools\/\">school\u2019s language program<\/a> regarding your student health insurance, or if you are a <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/temporary-visa-for-japan\/\">tourist visiting Japan<\/a>, consider getting foreign travel insurance from your own country in case an emergency occurs.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions you should be prepared to answer from the doctor (\u304a\u533b\u8005\u3055\u3093 <em>oishasan<\/em>) or nurse<strong> (<\/strong>\u770b\u8b77\u5a66\u3055\u3093 <em>kangofusan<\/em>) include:<strong><br \/><\/strong><br \/>\u3069\u3053\u304c\u304a\u60aa\u3044\u306e\u3067\u3059\u304b (<em>doko ga o-warui no desuka?<\/em>): <strong>What kind of symptoms do you have?<br \/><\/strong>\u3069\u3053\u304c\u75db\u3044\u3067\u3059\u304b (<em>Doko ga itai desu ka?<\/em>):<strong> Where do you have pain?<br \/><\/strong>\u71b1\u304c\u3042\u308a\u307e\u3059\u304b (<em>Netsu ga arimasu ka?<\/em>): <strong>Do you have fever?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For emergencies and more serious symptoms or unless recommended by a clinic, you can consider going to the hospital. However, in the case of a serious emergency and you should call the <strong>emergency hotline 119<\/strong> and request and ambulance by saying <strong>\u6551\u6025\u8005\u3092\u547c\u3093\u3067\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044<\/strong> (<em>ky\u016bky\u016bsha o yonde kudasai<\/em>) \u201ccall an ambulance!\u201d If you visit the hospital and require a second appointment, you will be given a <strong>medical card<\/strong> (\u8a3a\u5bdf\u5238 <em>shinsatsuken<\/em>) you must bring back.<\/p>\n<h2><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74257\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/sick-in-japan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"436\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Vocabulary for the body\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can first start off by saying you generally don\u2019t feel well: <strong>\u6c17\u5206\u304c\u60aa\u3044\u3067\u3059<\/strong> (<em>kibungawaruidesu<\/em>). To be more specific, it is helpful to know the following vocabulary for parts of the body, you can describe where you feel pain when combined with the phrase \u201cit hurts\u201d (\u301c<strong>\u304c\u3044\u305f\u3044\u3067\u3059<\/strong> \u301c<em>ga itai desu<\/em>). Drugstores are places that typically sell everything from daily supplies to cosmetics and even food, while pharmacies sell medicine that require doctor\u2019s prescription. Matsumoto Kiyoshi is a large drugstore chain in Japan, with multilingual staff. If you are directed to a pharmacy, you will likely be asked again to fill out a medical questionnaire. The general <strong>word for medicine is \u85ac<\/strong> (<em>kusuri<\/em>). so you will notice that different types of medicines will still include that word. <strong><br \/><\/strong><br \/>\u51e6\u65b9\u7b8b (<em>shohousen<\/em>):<strong>\u00a0medical prescription<\/strong><br \/>\u85ac\u00a0 (<em>kusuri<\/em>):\u00a0<strong>medicine or drug<\/strong><br \/>\u98f2\u307f\u85ac (<em>nomigusuri<\/em>):\u00a0<strong>medicine that you drink<\/strong><br \/>\u7c89\u85ac (<em>konagusuri<\/em>):\u00a0<strong>powdered medicine<\/strong><br \/>\u5857\u308a\u85ac (<em>nurigusuri<\/em>):\u00a0<strong>topical medicine for the skin<\/strong><br \/>\u54b3\u6b62\u3081 (<em>sekidome<\/em>):\u00a0<strong>cough syrup<br \/><\/strong>\u75db\u307f\u6b62\u3081 (<em>itamidome<\/em>):<strong>\u00a0painkiller<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We hope this vocabulary list gets you started on how to communicate any sickness or pain you might be feeling during your time in Japan.
