Whether you are in Japan or not, there are a range of shows available on the popular streaming platform that can help you with your Japanese listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and general understanding of how the language is used in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read on to see our suggestions on what shows to watch to learn Japanese through Netflix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Series<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Terrace House<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This popular reality series follows the lives of six young strangers living in a house together. Viewers watch them go about their daily lives and develop their interpersonal relationships with each other in both good and bad ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the show is no longer in production<\/strong>, its extensive archive remains one of the best ways to hear natural, casual Japanese as it’s spoken by young adults in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show is not scripted and features a lot of everyday language<\/strong>, especially language that younger people use on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can find outtakes from each episode on the official Terrace House YouTube channel<\/a>. These are good to watch for those who want to try and follow natural conversations without subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For advanced learners, you can also watch extra commentary by host Ryota Yamasato (called Yamachan on the show) and other videos on the Netflix Japan channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ainori<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A beloved show amongst Japanese people, Ainori\u2019s first season dates back to 1999. Netflix rebooted the show from 2017 so there are currently only three seasons available on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show follows seven strangers who travel around different parts of the world in a pink van. Their goal is to find love amongst the other contestants, declare their love, and return to Japan together. As they travel they take part in different activities to learn more about the places they visit, so it\u2019s part-dating show and part-travelogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Terrace House, there is a lot of everyday language used so it\u2019s a great show to watch to learn natural Japanese<\/strong> through Netflix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midnight Diner<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This show follows the owner of a small restaurant in Tokyo who only opens his place from midnight to 7 am. The storyline follows those of his customers, who visit the diner and talk about their lives over their meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each episode features a different customer and different story<\/strong>, so it\u2019s interesting and entertaining, as well as great for learning everyday Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aggretsuko<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You might mistake this for just another cute show from Sanrio. But don\u2019t let Retsuko\u2019s kawaii red panda face fool you. She is a 25-year-old office worker who works for a sexist boss and sings heavy metal at karaoke at night to release her stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an interesting insight into Japanese work culture<\/a> and the issues that women face in the workforce<\/strong>. Aggretsuko is a great way to learn Japanese through Netflix while understanding more about Japan\u2019s social issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rilakkuma and Kaoru <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first stop-motion animation of Japan\u2019s popular stationery mascot bear is a great way to learn Japanese through Netflix. The language is clear and easy to follow and focuses on daily conversations<\/strong>. It\u2019s a very well-made and very whimsical series that also looks at some pressing issues in Japanese society and the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This beautiful, slice-of-life series directed by award-winning filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda follows two childhood best friends who move to Kyoto to become maiko<\/em> (apprentice geisha)<\/a>, though one of them ends up becoming the house\u2019s live-in cook instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dialogue is gentle, slow-paced, and incredibly clear, making it perfect for lower-intermediate learners. It focuses heavily on daily routines, food, and friendship. You\u2019ll also get a mix of standard Japanese (Hy\u014djungo<\/em>) and polite, soft Kyoto dialect (Kyokotoba<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebooting (<\/strong>\u30d6\u30e9\u30c3\u30b7\u30e5\u30a2\u30c3\u30d7\u30e9\u30a4\u30d5, Brush Up Life)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This critically acclaimed comedy-drama follows a 33-year-old local government worker who suddenly dies and is given the chance to restart her life from infancy. She must relive her exact same life multiple times to collect enough good deeds to be reborn as a human, and not as the different animals and creatures she is initially assigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by popular comedian Bakarhythm, the show is famous for its hilarious, ultra-realistic conversations. You will hear incredibly natural, fast-paced casual speech, modern slang, and the exact kind of lighthearted banter that Japanese friends use when hanging out. It\u2019s perfect for intermediate to advanced listening comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movies<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ghibli films<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unless you live in Japan or North America, you will have access to 21 Ghibli films on Netflix. The language used in the movies is generally not hard to follow, so it\u2019s great for practicing your Japanese<\/strong>. Your Name<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This anime went big across Asia when it was released in 2016 and it\u2019s not hard to see why. It\u2019s beautifully animated with a perfect balance of romance, comedy, and drama. As well as watching the movie, you can also listen to the soundtrack and learn the lyrics to the songs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning tips<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many of the Japanese shows on Netflix have both Japanese and English subtitle options. Put the English subtitles on if you\u2019re a beginner learner to help you understand the dialogue and identify words as you watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also download a Chrome extension called Language Reactor<\/a><\/strong> (formerly Language Learning with Netflix<\/em>). It allows you to watch shows with two sets of subtitles on-screen at the same time and hover over words for instant translations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than watch passively, make sure you\u2019re listening to how words and phrases are used. Take notes<\/strong> of new words and phrases and break a show down into shorter, more easily digestible segments. Re-watch it, learn the sentences, and speak along with the characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you learn more advanced vocabulary, grammar, and kanji<\/em>, try switching the subtitles to Japanese so you are practicing both listening and reading skills. When you get more advanced, you can try studying shows without subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
