Finding a place to live is a significant step in your move to Japan<\/a>. If you want to tackle this in Japanese, you will need to know a few specific words in order to successfully rent an apartment in Japan.<\/p>\n

Helpful vocabulary<\/b><\/h2>\n

Real estate company<\/strong> – \u4e0d\u52d5\u7523\u4f1a\u793e, fudousangaisha<\/em><\/p>\n

Real estate agent<\/strong> – \u4e0d\u52d5\u7523\u5c4b, fudousanya<\/em><\/p>\n

Tenant<\/strong> – \u501f\u5bb6\u4eba, shakuyanin<\/em><\/p>\n

Monthly rent<\/strong> – \u5bb6\u8cc3, yachin<\/em><\/p>\n

Deposit<\/strong> – \u6577\u91d1, shikikin<\/em>, or \u4fdd\u8a3c\u91d1, hoshoukin
<\/em>*Normally the equivalent of about 1-2 months\u2019 rent<\/p>\n

<\/em>*This is a person that promises to cover your rent or damages in case you can\u2019t pay or suddenly leave the country. Often this needs to be a Japanese national, but it\u2019s also common to pay for a guarantor company, or \u4fdd\u8a3c\u4f1a\u793e, hoshougaisha<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Key money<\/strong> – \u793c\u91d1, reikin
<\/em>*This is also known as gift money and is paid to the landlord. There are many properties in Japan that do not require key money.<\/p>\n

Contract<\/strong> – \u5951\u7d04, keiyaku<\/em><\/p>\n

Renewal fee<\/strong> – \u66f4\u65b0\u6599, koshinryo
<\/em>*Leases on regular rentals in Japan last two years. Some landlords will charge a renewal fee equivalent to about one month\u2019s rent if you wish to continue living there for another two years.<\/p>\n
