The JR East Welcome Rail Pass is an expat-friendly pass and the first of its kind to be made available for foreigners in Japan by JR East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to find out about what the pass is and how you can use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>JR East Welcome Rail Pass basic info<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The pass is for those with <b>visas in Japan who hold a passport issued by another country<\/b>. The Japanese visa can be in any category, including temporary visitor and <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/japan-student-visa\/\">student<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy the pass between October 16, 2020 and February 26, 2021. It must be used between October 16, 2020 and February 28, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pass is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wamazing.com\/ticket\/tickets\/wrp2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online<\/a> and from JR East Travel Service Centres. You can reserve seats for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy the pass more than once provided your dates of travel don\u2019t overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost is <b>12,000 yen for adults<\/b> and <b>6,000 yen for children<\/b>. For context, a Shinkansen ticket with a reserved seat to Nagano city from Tokyo costs 8,340 yen one way. A reserved seat on the Shinkansen up north to Akita costs 18,120 yen one way. There\u2019s no doubt that the JR East Welcome Rail Pass offers incredible value, particularly if you\u2019re heading a bit farther away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/JR-travel.jpg\" alt=\"JR East Travel service centre\" class=\"wp-image-69859\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Where can you go with the pass?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You get <b>unlimited travel<\/b> on all JR East trains in Tokyo, Tohoku, Nagano, and Niigata for <b>3 consecutive days<\/b>. The pass includes use of Shinkansen and limited express trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the perfect opportunity to experience the very best of Japan\u2019s autumn and winter. Visit beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/best-locations-to-experience-autumn-in-japan\/\">autumn foliage spots<\/a>, especially up north in Tohoku. The <b>Naruko Gorge<\/b> is one of the area\u2019s most famed spots and it\u2019s truly stunning if you go at the right time. You can go to <b>Aomori<\/b>, which is the northernmost capital city on Honshu, Japan\u2019s main island. Go beyond that and you\u2019re in Hokkaido! Near Aomori is <b>Lake Towada<\/b>, which is another popular place to go to admire autumn leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Akita<\/b>, where the cute <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/akita-inu-japanese-dog-owner-story-and-advice\/\">Akita dog<\/a> breed comes from, is also in the Tohoku region and it has good access to <b>Kakunodate<\/b>, a former castle and samurai town that has remained largely unchanged since it was founded in 1620. Nearby is <b>Lake Tazawa<\/b>, a beautiful scenic lake that hasn\u2019t been overdeveloped and is Japan\u2019s deepest lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the pass to experience some of <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/skiing-in-japan-the-best-spots-for-winter-sports-lovers\/\">Japan\u2019s most popular ski fields<\/a>, too. Head to <b>Niigata<\/b> for <b>Yuzawa<\/b>, one of Japan\u2019s largest ski fields. It\u2019s easily accessible from Tokyo and takes less than two hours, so you can even make it a day trip. Go further north and you can head to <b>Zao Ski Resort<\/b>, the largest in the Tohoku region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, go west to <b>Nagano<\/b>, where you can ski at <b>Hakuba<\/b>, which hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. Nearby, you can visit the famous <b>Jigokudani Monkey Park<\/b>, where you can see the bathing snow monkeys.
