As mentioned, it can be hard to find English-speaking staff and you won\u2019t find a lot of English at most post offices in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help make it less of a bewildering experience, here are some phrases in Japanese for the post office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The basics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u624b\u7d19 <\/b><b><i>tegami<\/i><\/b> &#8211; letter<br><b>\u8449\u66f8 <\/b><b><i>hagaki <\/i><\/b>&#8211; postcard<br><b>\u5c01\u7b52 <\/b><b><i>f\u016bt\u014d<\/i><\/b> &#8211; envelope<br><b>\u5207\u624b <\/b><b><i>kitte<\/i><\/b> &#8211; stamp<br><b>\u5c0f\u5305 <\/b><b><i>kozutsumi<\/i><\/b> &#8211; package<br><b>\u7bb1 <\/b><b><i>hako<\/i><\/b> &#8211; box<br><b>\u58ca\u308c\u7269 <\/b><b><i>kowaremono<\/i><\/b> &#8211; fragile goods<br><b>\u8ffd\u8de1\u756a\u53f7 <\/b><b><i>tsuisekibang\u014d<\/i><\/b> &#8211; tracking number<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Delivery options<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u666e\u901a\u90f5\u4fbf<\/b><b><i> futs\u016by\u016bbin<\/i><\/b> &#8211; ordinary mail<br><b>\u8239\u4fbf <\/b><b><i>funabin<\/i><\/b> &#8211; surface mail (by ship)<br><b>\u822a\u7a7a\u4fbf <\/b><b><i>k\u014dk\u016bbin<\/i><\/b> &#8211; airmail<br><b>\u901f\u9054 <\/b><b><i>sokutatsu<\/i><\/b> &#8211; special\/express delivery e.g. urgent mail,<br><b>\u56fd\u969b\u30b9\u30d4\u30fc\u30c9\u90f5\u4fbf <\/b><b><i>kokusaisupi-doy\u016bbin<\/i><\/b> &#8211; Express Mail Service (EMS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: you would normally use surface mail (the cheapest option), airmail (the main option), or EMS (the fastest but most expensive option) to send post and parcels overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that as of January 1, 2021, you need to print out a package label for international packages, rather than write the label out by hand. Visit the official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post.japanpost.jp\/int\/ead\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japan Post website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The form will be in English if you access it through the English website, but it\u2019s always good to know some common Japanese for the post office that you\u2019ll commonly see anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>\u6c0f\u540d <\/b><b><i>shimei<\/i><\/b> &#8211; The staff tend to be very helpful when they see you\u2019re a foreigner and you\u2019ll get the hang of it once you use the post office a few times.
