Going on a date can be nerve-wracking enough without having to worry about the language barrier as well. If you\u2019re in the dating game in Japan, then chances are you\u2019ll want some Japanese that you can use while on a date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re not fully proficient yet, using Japanese on a date can help immensely in building a connection with the other person while also helping you to develop your Japanese communication skills too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Small talk & conversation starters<\/b><\/h2>\n

Every date needs some conversation starters. And even if you hate small talk, you might find that some of these phrases come in handy on your date.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compliments<\/b><\/h2>\n

What great date doesn\u2019t include some compliments? Here are some in Japanese that you can use on your next date.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u304b\u308f\u3044\u3044\u30fb\u304b\u3063\u3053\u3044\u3044\u3067\u3059\u306d\uff01
<\/b>Kawaii\/kakkoii desu ne!
<\/i><\/b>You\u2019re cute\/handsome!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u512a\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059\u306d\u3002
<\/b>Yasashii desu ne
<\/i><\/b>You\u2019re kind.
<\/span>*You can replace the adjective with other words such as: <\/span>subarashii<\/i><\/b> \u3059\u3070\u3089\u3057\u3044 <\/b>(wonderful), <\/span>sugoi<\/i><\/b> \u3059\u3054\u3044 <\/b>(amazing, great), <\/span>jouzu<\/i><\/b> \u4e0a\u624b <\/b>(you\u2019re good at), <\/span>kiyou<\/i><\/b> \u5668\u7528 <\/b>(skillful), <\/span>atama ga ii<\/i><\/b> \u982d\u304c\u3044\u3044<\/b> (smart) etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u305d\u306e\u670d\u4f3c\u5408\u3063\u3066\u308b\u3002
<\/b>Sono fuku ni atteru
<\/i><\/b>That clothing suits you.
<\/span>*Again, you can replace the noun with other words like: <\/span>shatsu <\/i><\/b>\u30b7\u30e3\u30c4 <\/b>(shirt)<\/span>,<\/b> wanpiisu <\/i><\/b>\u30ef\u30f3\u30d4\u30fc\u30b9 <\/b>(dress), <\/span>kutsu<\/i><\/b> \u9774 <\/b>(shoes), etc. You can also say someone\u2019s job – <\/span>shigoto <\/b>\u4ed5\u4e8b<\/b> – suits them, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re given a compliment, you can return it by saying:<\/span><\/p>\n

____\u3055\u3093\u3082\u512a\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059\u3002
<\/b>(Your date\u2019s name) is also kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Or you can also say, sochira koso <\/strong><\/em>\u305d\u3061\u3089\u3053\u305d<\/strong><\/span>, which means \u201clikewise\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s very common to respond to compliments with humility in Japan, so you would say something like:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u305d\u3093\u306a\u3053\u3068\u306a\u3044\u3067\u3059\uff01
<\/b>Sonna koto nai desu!
<\/i><\/b>That\u2019s not the case!<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember: it\u2019s always polite to first thank the other person for the compliment before denying it.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also express how happy you are to be complimented by saying:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/i><\/b>I\u2019m glad! (As in: that made me happy)<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, it\u2019s always more polite to thank the other person first and then follow it up with your expression of gratitude.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving things along<\/b><\/h2>\n

If things are going well with your date, you can suggest to move on to another activity or place so you can spend more time together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can ask:<\/span><\/p>\n

Ending the date<\/b><\/h2>\n

Hopefully your date has gone well and although you might not want to, it\u2019s time to end the night. Some phrases that might be useful include:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/i><\/b>I had a lot of fun!<\/span><\/p>\n
