If you\u2019re in the dating game in Japan, then chances are you\u2019ll want some Japanese that you can use while on a date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even if you\u2019re not fully proficient yet, using Japanese on a date can help immensely in building a connection with the other person while also helping you to develop your Japanese communication skills too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Small talk &#038; conversation starters<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every date needs some conversation starters. Here are some in Japanese that you can use on your next date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u304b\u308f\u3044\u3044\u30fb\u304b\u3063\u3053\u3044\u3044\u3067\u3059\u306d\uff01<br \/><\/b><b><i>Kawaii\/kakkoii desu ne!<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019re cute\/handsome!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u512a\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059\u306d\u3002<br \/><\/b><b><i>Yasashii desu ne<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019re kind.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*You can replace the adjective with other words such as: <\/span><b><i>subarashii<\/i><\/b><b> \u3059\u3070\u3089\u3057\u3044 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(wonderful), <\/span><b><i>sugoi<\/i><\/b><b> \u3059\u3054\u3044 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(amazing, great), <\/span><b><i>jouzu<\/i><\/b><b> \u4e0a\u624b <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(you\u2019re good at), <\/span><b><i>kiyou<\/i><\/b><b> \u5668\u7528 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(skillful), <\/span><b><i>atama ga ii<\/i><\/b> <b>\u982d\u304c\u3044\u3044<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (smart) etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u305d\u306e\u670d\u4f3c\u5408\u3063\u3066\u308b\u3002<br \/><\/b><b><i>Sono fuku ni atteru<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That clothing suits you.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*Again, you can replace the noun with other words like: <\/span><b><i>shatsu <\/i><\/b><b>\u30b7\u30e3\u30c4 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(shirt)<\/span><b>,<\/b> <b><i>wanpiisu <\/i><\/b><b>\u30ef\u30f3\u30d4\u30fc\u30b9 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(dress), <\/span><b><i>kutsu<\/i><\/b><b> \u9774 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(shoes), etc. You can also say someone\u2019s job &#8211; <\/span><b>shigoto <\/b><b>\u4ed5\u4e8b<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; suits them, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re given a compliment, you can return it by saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>____\u3055\u3093\u3082\u512a\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059\u3002<br \/><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Your date\u2019s name) is also kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or you can also say, <em><strong>sochira koso <\/strong><\/em><strong>\u305d\u3061\u3089\u3053\u305d<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which means \u201clikewise\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s very common to respond to compliments with humility in Japan, so you would say something like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u305d\u3093\u306a\u3053\u3068\u306a\u3044\u3067\u3059\uff01<br \/><\/b><b><i>Sonna koto nai desu!<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s not the case!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember: it\u2019s always polite to first thank the other person for the compliment before denying it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can also express how happy you are to be complimented by saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u5b09\u3057\u3044\u3067\u3059\uff01<br \/><\/b><b><i>Ureshii desu!<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m glad! (As in: that made me happy)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again, it\u2019s always more polite to thank the other person first and then follow it up with your expression of gratitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Moving things along<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If things are going well with your date, you can suggest to move on to another activity or place so you can spend more time together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u3069\u3053\u304b\u307b\u304b\u306e<\/b><b>\u30ec\u30b9\u30c8\u30e9\u30f3\u30fb\u30ab\u30d5\u30a7<\/b><b>\u306b\u884c\u304d\u307e\u3057\u3087\u3046\u304b\uff1f<br \/><\/b><b><i>Doko ka hoka no <\/i><\/b><b><i>restoran\/kafe<\/i><\/b><b><i> ni ikimashouka?<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shall we go to another restaurant\/cafe?<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you know a place, you can tell your date:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u3044\u3044\u30ec\u30b9\u30c8\u30e9\u30f3\u30fb\u30ab\u30d5\u30a7\u77e5\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3088\uff01<br \/><\/b><b><i>ii <\/i><\/b><b><i>restoran\/kafe<\/i><\/b><b><i> shitte imasu yo!<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I know a good restaurant\/cafe!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or you can ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u3044\u3044<\/b><b>\u30ec\u30b9\u30c8\u30e9\u30f3\u30fb\u30ab\u30d5\u30a7<\/b><b>\u77e5\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059\u304b\uff1f<br \/><\/b><b><i>ii <\/i><\/b><b><i>restoran\/kafe<\/i><\/b><b><i> wo shitte imasuka?<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you know a good restaurant\/cafe?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ending the date<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hopefully your date has gone well and although you might not want to, it\u2019s time to end the night.
