Interviews (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mensetsu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u9762\u63a5)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are an essential part of job hunting anywhere in the world, but there are also some etiquette and cultural norms in Japan that you may not be familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this article, we look at what you need to prepare and be aware of for a job interview in Japan, as well as some essential vocabulary and phrases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Before entering the room<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The importance of properly preparing for any job interview cannot be understated. It will make or break your ability to give off a good first impression. As well as preparing answers for questions, also get a hardcopy of your CV and portfolio (if applicable) ready, as well as evidence of your Japanese language proficiency (such as a JLPT certificate).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s important that you know how to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/keigo-the-honorific-speech-in-japanese\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">honorific Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">keigo<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u656c\u8a9e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It doesn\u2019t need to be perfect, but you do need to show you have a good understanding of how and when to use polite Japanese.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having a clean and tidy appearance is important, as is wearing the right clothes. Knock three times first and wait for a response. Once you hear, \u201cD\u014dzo\u201d, then you can say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u5931\u793c\u3044\u305f\u3057\u307e\u3059<\/b><b>\u3002<br \/><\/b><b><i>Shitsureiitashimasu.<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Excuse me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And then enter the room. Make sure to close the door quietly and bow to your interviewers. Don\u2019t take a seat immediately &#8211; instead, stand next to the chair and introduce yourself. Usually, you would say the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u4eca\u65e5\u306f\u304a\u6642\u9593\u3092\u3044\u305f\u3060\u304d\u3001\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002<br \/><\/b><b><i>Ky\u014d wa ojikan wo itadaki, arigat\u014d gozaimasu.<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you for your time today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f \u3068\u7533\u3057\u307e\u3059\u3002<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><b><i>\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f to m\u014dshimasu.<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My name is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f\uff3f.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>\u3088\u308d\u3057\u304f\u304a\u9858\u3044\u3044\u305f\u3057\u307e\u3059\u3002<br \/><\/b><b><i>Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.<br \/><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nice to meet you\/thank you for looking after me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure to bow after you finish speaking and only sit down once the interviewer indicates for you to sit. Remember to excuse yourself with: \u201cShitsureiitashimasu\u201d and bow before making your way to the door.
