It\u2019ll come as no surprise then that there is a public holiday that celebrates the ocean and everything it offers &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Umi no Hi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u6d77\u306e\u65e5, or Marine Day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read on to learn all about Marine Day in Japan and some easy ocean-related words in Japanese.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/fireworks.jpg\" alt=\"watching fireworks\" class=\"wp-image-75758\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Celebrating Marine Day in Japan<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Umi no Hi is celebrated on the third Monday of July. As the name states, it\u2019s a day to celebrate and show appreciation for the sea. Marine Day was established in 1941 to commemorate Emperor Meiji\u2019s voyage around Tohoku in 1876 on an iron steamship. He traveled from Aomori to Hakodate, then from Hakodate to Yokohama. Marine Day wasn\u2019t designated a public holiday until 1995, however.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the holiday falls during summer and at the end of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/japans-rainy-season-isnt-all-bad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rainy season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, many people take the opportunity to go to the beach or take a trip to the coast where they can go swimming, eat fresh seafood, and relax by the ocean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of Japan\u2019s top beach destinations include <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/learn-japanese-in-okinawa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Okinawa<\/a>, the Izu Peninsula, and the Ogasawara Islands. For those who prefer to stay closer to home, they might visit a local aquarium, enjoy some fireworks displays, or simply indulge in some quality seafood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Japanese words for the ocean and the sea<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most common word used in Japanese for the sea is <\/span><b><i>umi<\/i><\/b><b> \u6d77<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and is used to describe the sea or ocean in general.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The words <\/span><b><i>kaiy\u014d<\/i><\/b> <b>\u6d77\u6d0b <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b><i>taiy\u014d<\/i><\/b><b> \u5927\u6d0b<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mean \u201cocean\u201d, but they are used more to refer to the large oceans, such as the Atlantic Ocean (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">taiseiy\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u5927\u897f\u6d0b), the Pacific Ocean (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">taiheiy\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u592a\u5e73\u6d0b), etc. Outside of these scientific uses, \u6d77\u6d0b and \u5927\u6d0b aren\u2019t used in common everyday language.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Things you find under the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The list of things you can find in the ocean is endless. Here are some basic vocabulary and easy phrases in Japanese for your next beach trip:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Beach<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although there is the word<\/span> <b><i>b\u00ecchi <\/i><\/b><b>\u30d3\u30fc\u30c1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which means \u201cbeach\u201d, it\u2019s more common to use the word \u201cumi\u201d.
