The predecessor to Kansai-ben was spoken in cities like Kyoto and Nara and was considered the standard Japanese before Edo, currently known as Tokyo, became the political powerhouse of Japan from the 17th Century.<\/p>\n

There are several differences in pitch, tone and stress of words when compared with the standard Japanese you learn at language school.<\/p>\n There are also many words that you only hear from those who speak Kansai-ben.<\/p>\n Some basic examples include:<\/p>\n \u304a\u304a\u304d\u306b \u306a\u3093\u307c \u307b\u3093\u307e \u3081\u3063\u3061\u3083 In addition to this, many<\/strong> endings of sentences differ<\/strong> with Kansai-ben. Some examples include:<\/p>\n In a spoken statement, \u3060 (da<\/i>) becomes \u3084 (ya<\/i>) e.g. Becomes: When you negate something, \u3058\u3083\u306a\u3044 (janai<\/i>) becomes \u3084\u306a\u3044 (yanai<\/i>) e.g. Becomes: Negating a verb is also different, as \u306a\u3044 (nai<\/i>) becomes verb + \u3093 (n<\/i>) or verb + \u3078\u3093 (hen<\/i>) e.g. Becomes: When you\u2019re expressing probability or inferring something, \u3067\u3057\u3087\u3046 (deshou<\/i>) becomes \u3084\u308d (yaro<\/i>) e.g\u96e8\u3067\u3057\u3087\u3046 Becomes: Aside from it being fun to learn, Kansai-ben is useful to learn for a few reasons, especially if you choose to live and study in the Kansai region.<\/p>\n You will sound more natural<\/strong> in conversations and less like you\u2019re reading from a textbook. It\u2019ll also be easier to understand what people are saying since Kansai-ben is so different from the standard Japanese you learn at school.<\/p>\n Kansai is also known for shaping Japanese pop culture<\/strong>, with many entertainers, comedians and talk-show hosts coming from the Kansai region. They use Kansai-ben in their acts, so you\u2019ll be better able to understand what they are saying.<\/p>\n Not many people expect Japanese language learners to know Kansai-ben, so it\u2019s a powerful skill that will help you make friends<\/strong> and create better business relationships<\/strong> if you end up working in the Kansai area.<\/p>\n The most obvious way to learn Kansai-ben is to live in Kansai and pick it up in your day-to-day life.
