What is the Japan Rail Pass?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Japan Rail Pass, or the JR Pass, is a train pass offered <\/span>only to foreign visitors to Japan. <\/b>This means it is not available<\/strong> to those on Student Visas or Working Holiday Visas in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The passes are offered for 7, 14, or 21 days. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are different types of JR Passes, but overall you will get unlimited travel on certain Japan Rail-run trains, including some bullet trains (<\/span>skinkansen<\/span><\/i> \u65b0\u5e79\u7dda), limited express and express trains, local trains, local JR buses, the Tokyo Monorail, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excluded from the pass are the fastest bullet trains – the Nozomi and Mizuho. Some special trains are available with the pass if you pay an additional fee. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get the Japan Rail Pass<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The easiest way to buy the Japan rail pass is to buy it online before you arrive in Japan<\/strong>. There are a handful of official JR Pass vendors, however, we recommend <\/span>JRailPass.com<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you buy the pass, you\u2019ll receive an Exchange Order, which you then take to a JR Rail ticket office to exchange for the pass. International airports and main train stations around the country will offer this service.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it worth it to buy the Japan Rail Pass?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we mentioned, the value of the pass will depend on your travel plans. If you are only planning to stay in one place and not do much inter-city travel, then it might not be worth your money. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you are traveling between cities, then the pass will easily prove its worth. Let\u2019s take a look at some examples.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost of a <\/span>7-day standard Japan Rail Pass<\/b> for an adult is \u00a5<\/span><\/span>50,000 (US$335, or EUR\u20ac316), as of October 2023.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Shinkansen ticket from <\/span>Tokyo<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>Osaka<\/span><\/a> costs roughly \u00a514,500 (US$97, EUR\u20ac<\/span><\/span>91) for a reserved seat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will also likely be taking local train rides, many of which are JR-owned and valid with the pass. And with <\/span>Kyoto<\/span><\/a> being so close to Osaka and also accessible on JR train lines, it would make sense to visit Kyoto while you\u2019re in the area too. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other ways to get around Japan<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Truth be told, the Shinkansen is one of the most expensive ways to travel intercity in Japan. It\u2019s also one of the fastest and most comfortable ways, however, there is another option if you want to save money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan\u2019s network of <\/span>highway buses<\/b> is a cheaper alternative to trains. A one-way trip from Tokyo to Osaka can vary but on average costs between \u00a54000 to \u00a56500 (US$26.50-$43.50, EUR\u20ac25-\u20ac41). It will take about eight hours, so if time is not an issue for you, then this could be a great money-saving option. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some websites you can use to check prices and book tickets include <\/span>Willer<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>kousokubus.net<\/span><\/a>. If you take a JR-owned bus, then this would be covered under your JR Pass.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It pays to do your research<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All in all, we think it is worth it to buy the<\/span> Japan Rail pass<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> as it is one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to travel around Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
