With the heart of anime and pop culture located in the Akihabara district, it should come as no surprise that you can find many <\/span>real-life anime locations<\/b> in Tokyo. These places are replicated in, or have inspired, the backdrops to many beloved anime shows and it\u2019s a delight seeing them in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at some popular locations that you can easily visit when you\u2019re in Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Azabu J\u016bban in <\/b>Sailor Moon<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

This famous and popular anime took a lot of inspiration from Tokyo to create its fictional Japanese city. Much of Usagi Tsukino<\/span> (<\/span>Tsukino Usagi<\/span><\/i> \u6708\u91ce \u3046\u3055\u304e), or Sailor Moon\u2019s, life takes place in the upscale neighborhood of <\/span>Azabu J\u016bban <\/b>\u9ebb\u5e03\u5341\u756a<\/b>, so it makes sense that one important real-life location is <\/span>Azabu Hikawa Shrine<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Azabu Hikawa Jinja<\/span><\/i> \u9ebb\u5e03\u6c37\u5ddd\u795e\u793e).<\/span><\/p>\n

This shrine is the setting of Hikawa Shrine in the series, where Rei Hino (<\/span>Hino Rei<\/span><\/i> \u706b\u91ce \u30ec\u30a4), who is Sailor Mars, works as a <\/span>Shint\u014d shrine<\/span><\/a> priestess. Looks-wise, the shrine in the show was actually inspired by another shrine, Hikawa Shrine (<\/span>Hikawa Jinja<\/span><\/i> \u6c37\u5ddd\u795e\u793e)<\/span> located in nearby Akasaka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another real-life <\/span>Sailor Moon<\/span><\/i> anime location in Tokyo is <\/span>Azabu Juban Station<\/span><\/a> and the areas around the station. Nearby is a statue that also features in the show – <\/span>The Girl in the Red Shoes<\/span><\/a>, or Kimi-chan. The girl was adopted by an American missionary couple, but was unable to leave Japan with them after contracting tuberculosis. She sadly died in an orphanage at the age of nine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Close to Azabu Juban is the unmistakable <\/span>Tokyo Tower<\/span><\/a>, which frequently appears in the background of Sailor Moon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With so much of this area inspiring the anime, there\u2019s no doubt that walking around you would feel as if you had stepped right into the<\/span> Sailor Moon<\/span><\/i> universe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yotsuya in <\/b>Your Name<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

The popular 2016 romance fantasy captured hearts all over the world. You can retrace the steps of the main characters Mitsuha and Taki in the area of <\/span>Yotsuya <\/b>\u56db\u8c37<\/b>, where some of the movie\u2019s most famous scenes took place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps one of the most recognizable is <\/span>Suga Shrine<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Suga Jinja<\/span><\/i> \u9808\u8cc0\u795e\u793e) <\/span>and the steps leading up to it, which feature at the end of the movie. No spoilers here, but it\u2019s a particularly poignant part of the film!<\/span><\/p>\n

Other locations not located in Yotsuya include the <\/span>NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>Shinjuku <\/b>\u65b0\u5bbf<\/b>, the <\/span>Yunika Vision<\/span><\/a> building near the east exit of Shinjuku Station, and inside <\/span>Tokyo City View<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>Roppongi <\/b>\u516d\u672c\u6728<\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shinjuku in <\/b>Weathering with You<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

Weathering with You<\/span><\/i> was another movie success for the director of <\/span>Your Name<\/span><\/i> and again, features many places found in, or inspired by, areas of Tokyo. A number of locations in the film can be found around Shinjuku, including the <\/span>Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower<\/span><\/a>, and the <\/span>Atami building<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>Kabukich\u014d \u6b4c\u821e\u4f0e\u753a<\/b>, a popular entertainment district.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A little farther away in the upscale area of Ginza \u9280\u5ea7 is what many <\/span>Weathering with You<\/span><\/i> fans believe inspired a red <\/span>torii <\/span><\/i>gate that sits on top of a building in the movie. The real shrine, <\/span>Asahi Inari Shrine<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Asahi Inari Jinja<\/span><\/i> \u671d\u65e5\u7a32\u8377\u795e\u793e)<\/span> is also atop a building, but it\u2019s not the same one as in the film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tokyo City View\u2019s observation deck makes an appearance in this film, as does <\/span>Odaiba<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Shibuya Crossing<\/span><\/a>, and also the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chiyoda in <\/b>Love Live! School Idol Project<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

This teenage school drama is set in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo and one of the most well-known locations is <\/span>Kanda My\u014djin Shrine<\/span><\/a> \u200b\u200b(<\/span>Kanda My\u014djin<\/span><\/i> \u795e\u7530\u660e\u795e). In the show, it\u2019s where one of the characters works as a shrine maiden, while the real-life shrine has a history of almost 1300 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
