As such, it became a custom to find the best and cheapest food options available. What I learned was options such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hangaku bent\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u534a\u984d\u5f01\u5f53, half-price lunchbox), family restaurants, and university lunch cafeterias. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are actually a lot of places to save money on food in Japan. Read on if you are interested in learning more about eating <strong>cheap food in Japan<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-99144 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/cheap-eats-in-Japan.jpg\" alt=\"Shop display window featuring cheap food in Japan, ramen and tempura.\" width=\"798\" height=\"436\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Affordable restaurants<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the goal is to eat your fill for the cheapest possible price, there are some chain restaurants that are recommended. Here you won&#8217;t find any McDonald\u2019s or anything like that &#8211; they are comparatively expensive and you can easily find way cheaper, and arguably more delicious, food in Japan!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are some recommendations:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hanamaru Udon (\u306f\u306a\u307e\u308b\u3046\u3069\u3093)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always get baffled when I enter<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hanamaruudon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hanamaru Udon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and see the cheap prices. Hanamaru Udon lets you create your own udon dish by adding toppings to your udon. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works like this: you grab a tray and tongs, select the toppings you want to add (such as tempura), then go to the counter and choose the size of the udon bowl you want. The cheapest one, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kake-udon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(udon noodles served in a light dashi broth)<\/span>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only costs 105 yen! Add a couple of toppings and you will still be below 400 yen! Best of all, it is really delicious and keeps you full!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Gy\u014dza no Ohsh\u014d (\u9903\u5b50\u306e\u738b\u5c06)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my go-to places after classes was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsho.co.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gy\u014dza no Ohsh\u014d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The restaurant serves a plate of delicious <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gy\u014dza<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u9903\u5b50, dumplings) for under 300 yen, and they have a lot of other dishes for cheap prices as well. Definitely a huge recommendation if you want to eat cheap but delicious food.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ramen Jir\u014d&nbsp; (\u30e9\u30fc\u30e1\u30f3\u4e8c\u90ce)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are the kind of person that can eat A LOT of food, Ramen Jir\u014d has you covered. For the price of 850 yen you get a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-japanese-ramen\/\">ramen<\/a> bowl, which would translate to an XXXL bowl anywhere else in the world. If you eat lunch here, you probably won&#8217;t feel hungry for dinner.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sukiya (\u3059\u304d\u5bb6)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people already know about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sukiya.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sukiya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and the other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gy\u016bdon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u725b\u4e3c fast-food restaurants such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.matsuyafoods.co.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matsuya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yoshinoya.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoshinoya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). However, my personal recommendation is Sukiya, simply because their toppings (especially the garlic one) make the gy\u016bdon dish so much tastier.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who don\u2019t know what gy\u016bdon is, it is basically a bowl of rice topped with slices of beef and onions. It is extremely popular among both Japanese people and foreigners because it\u2019s so cheap, easy to make, and delicious!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, you may want to confirm this yourselves, but I heard from a Japanese friend who worked part-time at a Sukiya restaurant that ordering a smaller bowl twice rather than one large bowl, gives you more meat for the same price. Typically I would order a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">namimori<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u4e26\u76db regular size) for 400 yen, and then if I still feel hungry, order a second one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-99124\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/family-restaurant.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a plate of pasta, side salad and soup\" width=\"798\" height=\"436\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Family restaurants<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not the cheapest option on the list, family restaurants can still be worthwhile to visit if you are a student. The beauty of family restaurants is that you can spend an afternoon there and study with your friends. They tend to have a cheap drink bar with unlimited soft drinks such as coffee and lemonade. If you don\u2019t want to have a full meal they also have bar dishes and desserts that fill your stomach for a below-average price. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of good family restaurants are: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skylark.co.jp\/gusto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gusto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u30ac\u30b9\u30c8), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saizeriya.co.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saizeriya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u30b5\u30a4\u30bc\u30ea\u30e4, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skylark.co.jp\/jonathan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u30b8\u30e7\u30ca\u30b5\u30f3) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikkuri-donkey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikkuri Donkey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u3073\u3063\u304f\u308a\u30c9\u30f3\u30ad\u30fc)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>University cafeterias<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a huge one. Many people don\u2019t know about this, but most university campuses are open for the public to visit. That includes their lunch restaurants as well, making them a great option to find cheap food in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lunch prices are adapted to fit student needs, and thus you often get a large variety of exquisite foods for a really cheap price. For example, I remember that at Kyoto University you could get a set meal with curry rice and a side dish for 399 yen, or a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yasai itame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u91ce\u83dc\u7092\u3081, fried vegetables with slices of meat and a topping) for 299 yen.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, campuses in Japan are usually really pretty and definitely worth checking out, so why not explore university life in Japan while having an affordable meal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-91397\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Japanese-street-food-stall.jpg\" alt=\"Women in yukata at a food stall\" width=\"798\" height=\"436\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Street food stalls<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street food stalls, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yatai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u5c4b\u53f0) are most common in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, but smaller cities have their share as well. If you happen to find one, I strongly recommend checking out their assortment. Most often the food is actually really cheap! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember one time when I was out in the middle of the night wandering aimlessly because I missed the last train, and randomly found a yatai serving huge portions of okonomiyaki for only 500 yen. Basically, almost every supermarket and convenience store sells lunch boxes in Japan. There is sushi, tonkatsu, karaage, steaks, curry &#8211; anything really!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are already affordable during regular hours. But if you really want to cash in, you wait until after dinner time (usually around 8 o\u2019 clock but it varies from store to store). That\u2019s when the stores discount their remaining bento boxes that weren\u2019t sold during the day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the way, when in the store, keep an eye out for stickers like \u201c3\u5272\u5f15\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">san-waribiki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 30% off) or \u201c5\u5272\u5f15\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go-waribiki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 50% off). Japanese people tend to use the kanji \u201c\u5272\u201d for discounts, and 1\u5272 is equal to 10%.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you enjoy reading about cheap dining options in Japan?
