That is indeed part of spring in Japan, but there is so much more to experience than that. Everything from tasty sakura-flavored seasonal foods to matsuri and hiking. <\/span><br><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on if you want to learn more about what to do in Japan in spring.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hiking.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a person walking with a red torii gate in the forefront\" class=\"wp-image-97346\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Hiking<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather during spring is ideal for hiking, as it\u2019s neither too cold nor too hot. It is also before the rainy season so it\u2019s not humid either. Furthermore, if you time it right, hiking during spring offers some spectacular sights where you can see the mountainsides colored pink due to the blooming sakura.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just remember that the time-window for the blooming event depends on altitude so if you plan on hiking up a higher mountain, the sakura may not yet have bloomed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When hiking longer distances, don\u2019t forget to bring plenty of food\/water, some good shoes, a charged phone, and depending on the area, a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kumayoke suzu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u718a\u3088\u3051\u9234 bell to make sound and scare away bears).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get you started, you can find some great hiking routes in Hakone, Nikko, Yudanaka (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/reasons-to-live-in-nagano\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nagano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Mt. Consequently, there are many matsuri that<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pay homage to the associated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kami<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u795e, Shinto deity). Below are some festivals associated with spring.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Kanda Matsuri (May)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanda Matsuri is one of the most famous festivals in Tokyo. They set off fireworks while singing and dancing, and parade over 200 portable shrines through the town of Kanda.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Aoi Matsuri (May)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those interested in Japanese history, Aoi Matsuri in Kyoto is a must. With a tradition dating back all the way to the Heian Period (794-1185) it is one of the oldest traditional matsuri in Japan. Expect to see large crowds dress up in traditional Heian-era clothing and form a kilometer long line that goes through the city.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Kanamara Matsuri (April)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to experience something rather eccentric and unique, you could also visit Kawasaki in early April and see the Kanamara matsuri. it is associated with praying for good fertility and where they carry a large shrine with the male genitalia across town.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Sanja Matsuri (May)<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asakusa is one of the most iconic temple areas in the Tokyo area and the associated Sanja Matsuri gathers huge crowds every year. As with most festivals,<\/span> there will be fireworks, dancing, lots of festival food,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and people dressed up in kimonos. Why not try renting a kimono and join the fun?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cherry-blossoms-in-Japan-1.png\" alt=\"Cherry blossom viewing\" class=\"wp-image-64054\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Cherry blossom viewing<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are in Japan between the end of March to mid-April, we recommend visiting a park and having a picnic under the <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/cherry-blossoms-in-japan-sakura-viewing-season\/\">cherry blossom<\/a> trees. The tradition of watching the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sakura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u685c, cherry blossom) and having a picnic is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hanami<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u82b1\u898b<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, flower-viewing).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make your picnic extra spectacular, why not prepare a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bent\u014d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u5f01\u5f53, lunch box), or buy some seasonal snacks to enjoy during your flower-viewing event?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have compiled some lists of the best places to visit for cherry blossom viewing. To give an example, it has become a custom to eat Kit Kats in Japan during spring, and they come in a multitude of flavors such as sakura, matcha, or sake.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other famous treats that come in sakura flavor are the Pocky, Milky Chocolate, and even potato chips from Chip Star. Seriously, you can find just about anything sakura-flavored during this season. Even carbonated drinks in the vending machines come with a touch of sakura. Is it tasty? I\u2019ll let you be the judge of that.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best treats to enjoy in spring is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wagashi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u548c\u83d3\u5b50, <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/japanese-sweets-for-every-season\/\">Japanese sweets<\/a>). There are lots of wagashi this time of the year. We recommend trying out the sakura manju, a steamed bun filled with sweet red bean paste and sakura leaves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or why not the sakura mochi, a rice cake filled with red bean paste and wrapped in sakura leaves? There is also the hanami dango, three colorful flavored balls of mochi on a skewer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, strawberries are also associated with spring in Japan and they are harvested during this season. It is popular to go on an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ichigo-gari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u3044\u3061\u3054\u72e9\u308a, strawberry hunting) or buy them and enjoy them together with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renny\u016b <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u7df4\u4e73, condensed milk). If you are feeling wild, you may also want to try a so-called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tenshi no ichigo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u5929\u4f7f\u306e\u3044\u3061\u3054, angel strawberry). Although quite expensive this snow-white strawberry is a once-in-a-lifetime delicacy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope that we have given you some sense of what you can do during spring in Japan.
