But knowing where to start and how to start can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re a complete beginner.

That’s where Go! Go! Nihon comes in. We support students from the very beginning of their Japanese language journey, helping them to study Japanese in Japan with confidence.

Why is learning Japanese in Japan the goal for so many learners?

For many people, learning Japanese in Japan is the ultimate goal. Studying in Japan allows you to experience the language as it’s actually used in daily life, not just in textbooks and classrooms.

When you learn Japanese in Japan, you’re surrounded by the language every day. You hear it on trains, see it on signs, and use it in shops, cafes, and classrooms. This kind of immersive learning helps you:

Build practical, everyday Japanese

Improve listening skills naturally

Gain confidence using Japanese outside the classroom

Learn cultural context alongside the language

Beginning your Japanese studies before Japan

Student visa applicants are generally expected to have a basic level of Japanese ability. In the past, evidence of around 150 hours of study could be used as proof. As of the October 2026 intake, immigration has changed the requirements. Applicants are now typically expected to demonstrate their level through an official exam result (such as JLPT N5 or equivalent) or by completing a school assessment/interview. Please note that some schools may require both.

If you have a university degree, you may be exempt from some of these requirements. However, this depends on the school’s internal policies, and some may still request official proof from all applicants.

Preparing to study Japanese in Japan with Go! Here are some general study hacks to help you learn Japanese more effectively.

Be consistent, not intense

Studying a little every day is far more effective than cramming once a week. Short, regular study sessions help reinforce what you’ve learned and make Japanese part of your routine.

Use Japanese every day

You don’t need advanced Japanese to start using it. Read signs, listen for familiar words, or use simple phrases when ordering food. Everyday exposure helps the language stick.

Start speaking early

Waiting until you feel “ready” often means waiting too long. Making mistakes is a natural part of language learning, and speaking early helps you build confidence faster.

Keep your review simple

Instead of re-reading textbooks, focus on reviewing key vocabulary and grammar regularly. Writing example sentences and saying phrases out loud can be more effective than passive study.

Accept mistakes as progress

Feeling uncomfortable means you’re learning. Every mistake is a step forward, not a setback. Additionally, Japanese people appreciate it when non-native speakers speak Japanese, and can be very kind about any mistakes you make.

Consume Japanese media

Watch movies and tv shows, listen to music and podcasts, read manga, and browse Japanese social media (known as “SNS” here — social networking sites).

Start your Japanese language journey with confidence

Beginning your Japanese language journey can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to do it alone. With the right study habits, structured learning, and clear guidance, studying Japanese — and eventually studying abroad in Japan — will become a realistic and achievable goal.

Whether you’re just starting online or preparing to move to Japan, Go!
