In this five-part series, we will break down each test level, what they test you on, how they\u2019re scored, and how to prepare for taking the exam. This is the first article, looking at the JLPT N5.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read on to learn more about what you need to know to pass the JLPT N5 exam.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>An introduction to the JLPT<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The JLPT has been around since 1984 and it is currently the most widely-taken Japanese language test in the world.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As well as acting as an indicator of language ability for <a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/studying-abroad-in-japan\/working-in-japan-for-international-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japanese employers hiring foreign workers<\/a>, passing a JLPT exam is also valid for meeting the government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/blog\/150-hour-study-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">150-hour study requirement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are <\/span><b>five levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the JLPT, with N5 being the easiest level to pass and N1 being the most difficult. You do not have to pass a certain level before moving onto the next level i.e. you do not have to have passed N5 before you can do the N4 exam.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each exam tests four things: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and listening.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Japan, the exam is normally held twice a year \u2014 once in July and once in December. There are many overseas testing sites, but not all of them offer the chance to take the test twice a year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlpt.jp\/e\/application\/overseas_list.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">official JLPT website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has the most updated information on where all the testing sites are and when they offer the chance to take the exam.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why take the JLPT N5 exam?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preparing for and taking the JLPT N5 exam is a great <\/span><b>learning experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>motivator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for beginner-level Japanese language students. It can be challenging to wrap your head around a new language, so having an exam to work towards can give you structure and learning goals that help take your language skills to the next level.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The N5 isn\u2019t going to land you a job with a Japanese company, but it does demonstrate your <\/span><b>ability to understand the building blocks of the language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This foundation is crucial to the success of your Japanese learning journey.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s also not downplay the sense of achievement you will feel when you pass the exam. It might be a lifelong dream of yours to learn Japanese, or you might have Japanese heritage and want to connect with your roots. What does this mean? You need to be able to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read hiragana and katakana&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Know about 100 kanji \u2014 these will be the most fundamental and common kanji, which you will usually study as a beginner Japanese learner<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Know vocabulary of about 800 words<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You should be able to read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. As well as be able to listen and understand conversations about regular daily life and classroom situations, and be able to pick up necessary information from short conversations spoken slowly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of this is covered in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/japaneseonline.gogonihon.com\/courses\/akamonkai-japanese-12-week-beginner-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Akamonkai Beginner Online Course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which gets you JLPT N5-ready in just 12 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Structure of the exam<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The exam has three sections and a time limit is allocated to each.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Vocabulary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(20 minutes)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the vocabulary section, you will be tested on:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reading of words in kanji<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kanji and katakana of words written in hiragana<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The meaning of words defined by context<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Words and expressions with similar meanings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Grammar and reading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (40 minutes)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the grammar and reading section, you will be tested on:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grammar formats that best suit sentences<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accurate sentence composition&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suitability of sentences for text flow<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comprehension of easy text of about 80 characters regarding topics and situations relating to study, everyday life, and work<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comprehension of easy text of about 250 characters regarding topics about everyday life&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability to retrieve information from materials, such as notices, of around 250 words<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Listening<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (30 minutes)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will be tested on:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability to comprehend necessary information to resolve specific issues and understand the appropriate action to take<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability to narrow down points based on necessary information presented in advance<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Choosing appropriate verbal expressions by listening and looking at illustrations<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability to choose the right responses by listening to short phrases, such as questions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Scoring of the exam<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To pass any JLPT exam, you need two things:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your total score needs to be at or above the overall points required to pass (the \u201coverall pass mark\u201d) AND<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your score in each section must be at or above the points required to pass each section (the \u201csectional pass mark\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you fail to achieve the pass mark for any section, then you fail the entire exam, even if you have reached the total overall points needed to pass.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For JLPT N5, the sectional pass marks are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vocabulary, grammar and reading: <\/span><b>38 points<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Listening: <\/span><b>19 points<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The overall pass mark is <\/span><b>80 points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. (max is 180 points)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Registering for the exam<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re in Japan and would like to register for the JLPT N5, you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.jees-jlpt.jp\/?lang=english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">apply online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> about three to four months before the scheduled exam date. Do as many practice tests as you can get your hands on. This means keeping to the time limit, not getting distracted, and don\u2019t cheat or look things up. Testing like this is also a great way to know where gaps in your knowledge are and where you need to put in more work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Study Japanese in Japan<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gogonihon.com\/en\/studying-abroad-in-japan\/study-abroad-programs-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studying Japanese at a language school<\/a> in Japan is by far one of the best ways to learn the language and prepare for your JLPT exam. This voucher will dictate which room you\u2019re in on exam day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the exam room, you will only be allowed your writing utensils on your desk. Normally you will only be allowed to use a pencil to record your answers. You can also have a watch, but it must be analog. We recommend you bring a watch, as there may not be any clocks in the room.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There will be short breaks between each section of the exam, which you can use to go to the toilet, go outside for a breather, or have some food and drink.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the exam is finished, you will wait until all test papers have been collected before you can leave the room.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note that this is just a general overview of the process if you\u2019re taking the JLPT in Japan. Processes at overseas testing sites may differ.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>When to expect your results<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re taking the test in Japan, you can expect your results in about two months. You can view your results through the JLPT online portal.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those taking the exam outside of Japan can expect results in two to three months, although details will vary by country.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Ace your JLPT N5 with Go!
