Kyoto is arguably the most historically and culturally rich city in Japan. With great numbers of amazing temples, shrines and other places that will give you great inspiration, there is no better place for someone wanting to fully experience traditional Japan. With 1.4 million of people and more than 30 universities, Kyoto is one of the leading academic cities in Japan.
Kyoto is not all about historical things though. It is also home to several modern technology companies like, video game giant, Nintendo. Despite being a "small" city compared to Tokyo, you will enjoy both ultra-modern and traditional shopping districts as Kyoto citizens are just as fashion-aware and updated like Tokyo people. If that's still not enough, Japan's third largest city, Osaka, is just about 30 minutes away by train.
